Kairos
Coffield #29
The Kairos prison ministry spoke in a powerful ways to several of the brothers-in-white during the weekend. The residents were a harder core group than normal. An Officers that was assigned to monitor the weekend commented that more officers would be needed for security because of the names some of the residents on the list. As the weekend progressed that officer noted a change in the resident’s attitude and was willing to help set up the conference room for some of the events, without further thought of additional security.
At the beginning of the weekend the Warden of Coffield penitentiary brought a State Board member to see the weekend being set up. He commented that the weekend cost Kairos almost $20,000 to host and that he felt it was the most effective ministry in the prison.
The cookies supplied by Abiding Peace and other churches had a softening effect on the brothers-in-white when they were told that all of them were homemade and had been prayed over. The prayer chain produced a quiet moment as they were told how these people who did not know them were praying for them. Different talks or events touched many of the residents. When one of the free world team members described his alcohol addiction during his talk, Joe from our table family bowed his head and wept. Lorenzo, another member of our table, was moved by the letters written by the team to each brother-in-white because he has been locked up for over six years without a visit or letter. Bob, a third family member, was struck by a simple poster with his name on it that used the word ‘clean’ to describe God’s work in his life.
The purpose of the Kairos weekend is to create support groups within the prison that can function independently as small Christian Families. The new Kairos residents were welcomed into this family during the closing on Sunday by residents who have attended past weekends and free world people from 4 day communities such as Via de Christo, Walk to Emmaus etc. at the close of the weekend.
God is allowing this ministry to erase the bitterness and hate that is held by so many of these residents and replace it with a feeling of love and brotherhood. Most of these residents will be released in the future and the work that God performs on them through this ministry will affect how they perform when they are living among us.
